Our collaboration with Iranian asylum-seeker poet Mohsen Soltany Zand began when we visited him during his incarceration in Villawood detention centre where he was detained for 4 years. While still in detention we collaborated on Mohsen, an EP of his poetry set to music composed by Geoffrey Datson and produced by Stickylabel. When he was finally released and recognised as a refugee, he spent much time with Geoffrey in the studio, translating his poems and up-skilling on electronic music composition and production, and eventually began collaboration on his next work, Australian Dream - a double album of Mohsen's poetry, music and song, voiced and sung by notable Australians, among them Brian Brown, Tom Keneally, Rosie Scott, Claudia Karvan and many others. That work was published in print as Inside Out by Kardoorair Press and gathered serious critical review. Work from the collection has been widely published in anthologies and academic articles. Most recently, his poem realpolitic appears in Solid Air (UQP 2019).
Mohsen is a multi-instumentalist and collaborates in live performance with DATSON HUGHES. Australian Dream was re-imagined as a live multimedia performance to coincide with its digital re-relelase and was performed at the Queensland Poetry Festival in 2017. The live work comprises live music, film and storytelling.
